It was the largest attack of the war in terms of weapons fired, although other strikes have killed more people. 

The assault comes as Ukraine and Russia prepared to conduct the third and final day of a [prisoner swap](https://www.reutersconnect.com/all?search=all%3AS8N3P803K&amp;linkedFromStory=true) in which both sides will exchange a total of 1000 people each.

Ukraine and its European allies have sought to push Moscow into signing a 30-day ceasefire as a first step to negotiating an end to the three-year war. 

Their efforts suffered a blow earlier this week when [Trump](https://www.reuters.com/world/us/donald-trump/) declined to place further sanctions on Moscow for not agreeing to an immediate pause in fighting, as Kyiv had wanted. 

Ukraine's air force said Russia had launched 298 drones and 69 missiles in its overnight assault, although it said it was able to down 266 drones and 45 missiles. 

Damage extended to a string of regional centres, including Ukraine's second-largest city, Kharkiv, as well as Mykolaiv in the south and Ternopil in the west. 

In Kyiv, Tymur Tkachenko, head of the city's military administration, said 11 people were injured in drone strikes. No deaths were reported in the capital, although four were killed in the region around the city, according to officials.

Such an atrocity just being a quiet Tuesday morning in "war"-time Gaza. No need to launch large air assaults, just one well directed missile is enough to kill a family of 13, no air deffenses to ever give them a chance to be protected by their fighting side.

Every time I read 'NATO fighter jets scrambled,' it feels so pathetic. Is this really the best the alliance can do  - invade Afghanistan and have many of its members participate in Iraq ? Is this what NATO stands for ?

Edit: Ukraine attempted to initiate accession talks in 2009 but was blocked by some NATO members. In a way, NATO effectively left Ukraine vulnerable to Russia and bears significant responsibility for not extending its protective umbrella. It's reassuring to have such reliable NATO allies along the border - almost entirely ineffective.

I hope somebody makes a movie about the planning and execution of these attacks in a couple of years. It must have taken a huge amount of work to get a lorry full of drones 2000km through Russia and hit 5 bases simultaneously. If it's true that the Ukrainians were all back in Ukraine before the attacks began that base security guys really need to step up their game. A truck parked next to the walls of an airbase for a couple of hours should really be checked out, especially now drones are the new normal.

Out of curiosity I googled list of active Russian military aircraft, and according to Wikipedia (not sure how accurate), Russia has 21 A-50, 56 TU-22 and 47 TU-95.

So potentially Ukraine eliminated a massive percentage of Russian Bombers in one night.

Edit: additional context, they have 20 TU-160, so a total of 123 bombers. Since we don’t know how many A-50 were destroyed, if it was only 1, then Russia might have lost 32% of its bombers from this attack.
